China: C-League- Dalian two points from title [Mon Sep 19th, 2005]

Dalian Shide virtually clinched their eighth Chinese championship by moving eleven points clear of second-placed Shanghai Shenhua, with only four games of the Chinese Super League remaining.

Hu Zhaojun scored the only goal of the Shide’s victory over strugglers Shenyang Ginde and despite the fact that prolific Bulgarian striker Zoran Jankovic was shown the red card eight minutes later, Dalian took all three points and it is only a matter of time before fans in the north-eastern port city can start celebrating.

Shanghai Shenhua dropped two points at Tianjin Teda and virtually dropped out of the title race. Shanghai’s defender Cheng Liang cancelled out Tianjin’s 16th minute opener, but Shenhua couldn’t find a winner, and need to take all three points next weekend when Dalian travel to China’s commercial centre to keep their faint title hopes alive.

Elsewhere, defending champions Shenzhen Jianlibao’s woeful campaign continued with a 5-1 defeat at Liaoning FC.

Top 5 standings:

1: Dalian Shide 56,  2: Shanghai Shenhua 45  3: Shandong Luneng 40,  4: Tianjin Teda 39  5: Beijing Hyundai 37
