Korea's Tae-Yong Shin announces retirement from Queensland club [Tue Sep 20th, 2005]
Brisbane (AFP) - South Korean midfielder Tae-Yong Shin will hang up his boots after failing to recover from a persistent ankle injury, according to his Australian club.
Queensland Roar head coach Miron Bleiberg said Shin, who was capped 21 times for South Korea, flew to his homeland for treatment on the troublesome ankle but decided to retire after being told surgery would sideline him for three months.
The 34-year-old scored three goals in his 21 national team appearances and won six Korean championship medals.
His retirement comes less than two months after he embarked on a new phase of his career in Australia's fledgling A-League.
Bleiberg said Shin would join the club's coaching staff.
"Because of the injury it hasn't worked out the way we hope, however, with his football brain and intellect we simply had to make sure that we kept him at the club," Bleiberg said.
