Uruguay: Penarol lose three points after violence [Wed Sep 21st, 2005]

The disciplinary tribunal of the AUF has decided to deduct three points from Penarol, after disturbances by their fans led to a Uruguayan league match being abandoned.

On the 11th of September, Penarol were winning 2-1 against Miramar Misiones, but with just a few minutes left to play, referee Martin Vazquez decided to suspend the match because of security reasons.

Penarol fans threw objects onto the field and pulled down a fence in the terraces. Uruguayan police shot rubber bullets into the stands to calm down the fans, but it was no use as the hooligans continued to cause havoc.

Miramar were given the three points after a majority vote went against Penarol during the three and a half hour tribunal process that included declarations by referee Martin Vasquez.

Penarol’s bitter rivals Nacional also lost three points in the Apertura after similar incidents earlier on in the year.
