Argentina: Home ban for Independiente, Racing stadium shut [Wed Sep 21st, 2005]

Buenos Aires (Reuters) - Independiente have been given a one-match home ban for safety violations during their derby match with arch-rivals Racing Club earlier this month.

Racing, meanwhile, have had their own stadium closed indefinitely because of structural problems with the upper tier.

Independiente's Doble Visera stadium and Racing's Cilindro de Avellaneda are located within 200 metres of each other in the industrial neighbour of Avellaneda.

Coprosede, the committee which is responsible for safety at sporting events in Buenos Aires province, said Independiente had ignored warnings not to distribute rolls of paper to their fans before the game on September 11.

It has also said the club had failed to prevent fans entering the stadium with cannisters of red smoke, which engulfed the arena before kickoff.

Coprosede said the smoke obscured the video security system and was a health hazard because of the chemicals it contained. It added that some paper had caught fire after it was thrown onto the field.

Independiente won the match 4-0.
