Greece: PAOK Salonika to sign Matthaeus as coach [Wed Sep 21st, 2005]
Athens (Reuters) - Greek club PAOK Salonika are close to signing former world champion Lothar Matthaeus as their new head coach after a miserable start to the season, a club official said.
"The deal is not done yet but we are close to it. Mr Matthaeus will be in Salonika towards the end of the week to watch the team in action and we should seal the deal then," the official said.
Matthaeus, who captained Germany to their 1990 World Cup victory in Italy, has been Hungary's national team coach since the beginning of last year.
PAOK, who finished fifth last season, fired coach Nikos Karageorgiou after only three league matches, with the club lying in 11th place with two points.
They also drew 1-1 at home in their UEFA Cup first round match against Metallurg Donetsk last week.
If Matthaeus, who has also coached Rapid Vienna and Partizan Belgrade since retiring as a player in 2000, takes the job, he will be the club's fourth coach in 12 months.
