England: Carling Cup Wrap [Thu Sep 22nd, 2005]

League Two leaders Grimsby Town's Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala scored two minutes from time to send Spurs tumbling out of the Carling Cup at vibrant Blundell Park.

Kamudimba Kalala rifled home from 20 yards to give Russell Slade's side a victory they deserved against a Spurs side containing five England players and 10 internationals in total.

Robbie Keane almost managed an equaliser in injury time, but Steve Mildenhall saved to complete Tottenham's embarrassment.

Aston Villa crushed Wycombe Wanderers 8-3 at the Causeway Stadium, but only after some early shocks. Wycombe took a sixth-minute lead through Nathan Tyson, but Steve Davis equalised on 14 minutes, only for Johnson to restore Wycombe's lead four minutes later. And six minutes before half-time, Tommy Mooney made it 3-1 to the Chairboys.

But it was a different story in the second half. Milan Baros netted three minutes after the interval, and James Milner levelled on 64 minutes. Clint Easton put through his own goal on 69 minutes, before Gareth Barry scored twice in five minutes. First he converted a 73rd minute penalty, then grabbed his second on 78 minutes. Milner made it seven on 86 minutes, and in the final minute Davis got his own second and Villa's eighth.

Charlton also had to come from behind to defeat Hartlepool 3-1 at The Valley. Daly netted for the visitors in the 40th minute, but there was still time for Jonatan Johansson to equalise from the penalty spot before half-time. In the second half, Darren Bent (73) and Jay Bothroyd (80) made the tie safe for the Addicks.

West Ham maintained their good form with a 4-2 win at Sheffield Wednesday, but had to withstand a strong fightback from the Owls. Bobby Zamora put the Hammers in front on two minutes, and Christian Dailly (54) and Zamora (63) extended the London club's lead. But goals from Coughlan (76) and Graham (77) hauled Wednesday back into the contest. However, the Hammers kept their nerve and David Bellion made it safe six minutes from time.

Goals in either half by Mikael Forssell gave Birmingham City a 2-0 win at Scunthorpe United, but Gillingham defeated Premiership Portsmouth 3-2 after extra-time. O'Neil scored for Pompey on 24 minutes, Byfield equalised on 42 minutes.

A Taylor penalty restored Pompey's lead (48), but Ashdown conceded an own goal on 56 minutes. There was no more scoring in regulation time, but four minutes into extra time Crofts put Gillingham ahead for the first time – and that is how it stayed.

Wigan Athletic defeated Bournemouth 1-0 with a Jason roberts goal four minutes from the end, while West Bromwich Albion were 4-1 winners against Bradford City. Nathan Ellington scored twice and Kamara and Earnshaw were also on target.

Schumacher scored Braford's consolation and Albion had Albrechtsen sent off in the 82nd minute. Sunderland were also reduced to 10 men - and forced into extra time - before overcoming Cheltenham Town. Smith was sent off for the Black cats in the final minute of regulation time, but Anthony Le Tallec got the decisive goal just two minutes into the extra period.
