Struggling Russian club Alania sack Israeli coach Shum [Fri Sep 30th, 2005]

Moscow (Reuters) - Israeli coach Itzhak Shum has been sacked by Alania Vladikavkaz just three months after taking over the struggling Russian premier league side.

Alania's official website said that 58-year-old Shum was fired along with his entire staff following a string of poor results.

Since he was appointed Vladikavkaz's coach in late June, Alania have won once and suffered six defeats in 11 league matches.

Alania, who won the Russian title in 1995 and finished second the following year, are second from bottom and in danger of relegation with six games left in the season.

Shum, who was born in the city of Nalchik, just 40km from Vladikavkaz, before emigrating to Israel at the age of nine, had successful spells with Israel's Maccabi Haifa and Greek club Panathinaikos, winning national titles with both.

He quit the Athens club last October after being severely criticised for his team's UEFA Champions League performances.
