Barcelona step up Zambrotta chase

The talented full-back again showed his qualities to a global audience by netting the opening goal as the Azzurri beat the Ukraine 3-0 on Friday night to reach the semi-finals in Germany.

And now the European champions are hoping to add him to their star-studded squad for the 2006-2007 season.

Juve's very future of course is up in the air at present because of the match-fixing scandal currently gripping Serie A.

And that should mean the Catalan giants will be able to prise Zambrotta away from Turin.

Barcelona daily El Mundo Deportivo claimed on Saturday that the two clubs are close to agreeing a deal for Zambrotta, and that would just leave the player himself to give the green light for a move.

Both Milan clubs - AC and Inter - are also interested in signing Zambrotta but at this stage Barca would appear to be favourites.

They've already signed Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen to replace the departed Henrik Larsson this summer.

And the addition of Zambrotta would give an even stronger look to a squad that is already packed with world stars
