![]() The draw has been made for the first round of the 2006/07 Carling Cup.
With Premiership clubs not entering the competition until the second and third rounds, the draw involves the 72 Football League clubs. In the northern section, Football League newcomers Accrington Stanley have been drawn at home to former European Cup winners Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, newly-relegated 2001 finalists Birmingham City will be at home to League Two side Shrewsbury. Northern section: Chesterfield v Wolves Stoke v Darlington Port Vale v Preston Burnley v Hartlepool Sheffield Wednesday v Wrexham Bury v Sunderland Hull v Tranmere Blackpool v Barnsley Huddersfield v Mansfield Carlisle v Bradford Rotherham v Oldham Scunthorpe v Lincoln Accrington v Nottingham Forest Grimsby v Crewe Leeds v Chester Doncaster v Rochdale Stockport v Derby Leicester v Macclesfield Southern section: Cardiff v Barnet Milton Keynes Dons v Colchester Swindon v Brentford Crystal Palace v Notts County Hereford v Coventry Swansea v Wycombe Peterborough v Ipswich Bournemouth v Southend Brighton v Boston Cheltenham v Bristol City Millwall v Gillingham Southampton v Yeovil Birmingham v Shrewsbury Plymouth v Walsall Bristol Rovers v Luton QPR v Northampton Torquay v Norwich Leyton Orient v West Brom Ties to be played in the week beginning 21 August. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 72 clubs are split geographically into north and south regions, with half the clubs seeded. The seedings are based on last season's league positions, so all the clubs from the Championship plus the top finishers in League One are in the seeded group. The 12 Premiership clubs not involved in European competition will join at the second round stage, with the eight other sides, including holders Manchester United taking their place in the third round. Ties will be decided on the night, with extra time and penalties if necessary. there are some interesting ties in the 1st round of the carling cup and theres always been upsets and i hope this season there will be some shock wins and i think there can be some upsets in the 1st round.. ![]()
