Lyon lift French Super Cup


Lyon lifted the Trophee des Champions with a penalty shoot-out victory over Paris Saint Germain.

The Ligue 1 champions overcome PSG 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in France's traditional curtain raiser to the new season.

Lyon boss Gerard Houllier fielded an understrength side, with nine internationals missing out after only recently returning to training.

PSG broke the deadlock just past the hour mark when Jerome Rothen volleyed home.

Lyon drew level on 70 minutes when Karim Benzema converted from the penalty spot after Kim Kallstrom had been felled in the area.

Neither side could find a winner in the remainder of the 90 minutes and the game had to be decided in a penalty shoot-out.

Bonaventure Kalou saw his spot kick saved, enabling Mahamadou Diarra to net the decisive penalty for Lyon.

The win was Lyon's fifth consecutive victory in the event as they get ready to begin the defence of their league title next week.

well done to lyon as they win the 06/07 french super cup..they didnt have a strong squad in by the way..many star players were missing and still won..

as for PSG i guess its not a good start for them but the season starts this weekend so we will see..
