he reserves played host to Bristol, in an uninspiring match which resulted in a 0-1 defeat.

An early first half goal from Frankie Bennett set the pirates asail, and left us struggling to find a rhythm. Vince Bartram denied the visitors a two goal lead when he saved a 35th minute penalty from Andy Gurney.

Stepping out in the second half, Arsenal showed plenty of determination. However, the young outfit failed to capitalise on the chances they created. The best came from a 49th minute move initiated by Ross Taylor, whose through ball picked out Omer Riza. After fooling the Rovers 'keeper, Omer shot wide of the goal.

A game of missed opportunities best described the fixture and George Armstrong concluded: "It's not about winning the competition. Up until two months ago, we'd have had a chance. But Arsene Wenger has done the right thing. He wants my players to come through to the first team. And that way, the younger kids get match practice."

Arsenal: Bartram, Crowe, Taylor, (Clark, 82 mins), V.Gislason, Woolsey (S.Gislason 69 mins), Wicks, Bowes, Vernazza, Rankin, Gray, Riza (T.Black, 56 mins)
