Platt holds the record for total transfer fees
(£22million) , with a successful spell in Italy.
The ex-England captain
was the second of Bruce Rioch's major summer signings,
joining Dennis Bergkamp at Highbury in a £4.75million
deal from Sampdoria.
The capture of Platt so soon after the arrival of
Bergkamp was a major coup for Arsenal and his scoring
prowess from midfield was underlined when, after missing
most of their pre-season games with a hamstring injury,
he netted in only his second and third games against
Southend and Wolves.
His comeback was
restricted however by a knee injury picked up in that
pre-season friendly against Wolves. Surgery was later
required, limiting Platt's starting appearances to 27
during the 95/96 season, even so only Dennis Bergkamp and
Ian Wright scored more goals.
This season has also been of misfortune for Platt. He
hasn't lived up to the expectations of some disgruntled
Gunners supporters, mainly due to some uncharactaeristic
misses infront of goal. However, whenever Platt is in the
side, Arsenal's performance seems to improve in the
majority of games and he does a lot of work that people
often do not see.
