Newcastle Betting Preview

There must be a big signing out there soon if Newcastle are to have any chance of having a decent campaign. The finished 7th last season, which was a fantastic achievement, but the Magpies will be without Michael Owen to begin with so things could turn ugly in the first few months. In fact they could struggle all season if they do not get a top class striker in.

The acquisition of Damien Duff should prove to be not only good value but it will give them the width to open sides up. The problem though is that Shola Ameobi and Alberto Luque might not be up to the challenge of tucking the ball away on a regular enough basis. By the time Owen returns the damage may have been done.

Glenn Roeder also knows how difficult it is to keep hold of his seat at St James’s and this will add to the pressure if Newcastle get off to a poor start. Things could spiral away from him very quickly and with a man as ruthless as Freddie Sheppard at the helm Roeder’s tenure might be short lived.

The loss of Alan Shearer is difficult to gauge, but the team lacks a bit of clout now that he is gone. The ironic thing is that Shearer would be top of the list to succeed Roeder too. Newcastle looked short on confidence in their pre-season games and that does not auger well.
