Total Goals Betting

There have been some exhilarating first few months of the English Premiership so far. Particularly, the extent of attacking and goal-scoring has been very exciting.

Last weekend, for example, 26 goals were scored in the eight games played on Saturday, averaging 3.25 goals per game. Including Wednesday's matches, the average jumps to 3.3 goals. Punters will doubtless have taken noticed and jump on the over 2.5 goals betting markets in upcoming games.

A large variety of players have been scoring the goals, not just pure strikers. Possibly the most talented scorer to emerge this year is Reading's Kevin Doyle. He has scored eight English Premier League goals, and the EPL Actim Index has Doyle in third for strikers, and fourth overall in the whole league. Pretty good for a player who was signed by Reading for almost nothing. It makes matters sweeter for Doyle since Reading are in the running for a UEFA Cup spot.

Another unforeseen star in the Premiership this season is Nwankwo Kanu. With nine goals this year for Portsmouth, Kanu has demolished his goal total from the past three years combined for West Brom and Arsenal football club. He has basically brought Portsmouth to this point, and the team is now overachieving at third spot in the league table. Few believed Kanu could reproduce his form after departing Arsenal, but he has proven sceptics wrong and may be more useful to his club than any other striker right now in the Premiership.

Gareth Barry is another one. The Aston Villa defender has netted an amazing six goals for his club. A expert from the penalty spot, Barry has already been recognized as a veteran footballer with 270 caps for Aston Villa at the current age of 24. His eight goals last year appeared fortunate, but that's no longer the case since Barry is set to surpass that total this year.

Last but definitely not least is Didier Drogba, who many feel is most dangerous striker on the planet at the moment. His future at Chelsea was tentative after they picked up Andriy Shevchenko, but now Drogba had something to prove this term. The exit of Hernan Crespo gave Drogba the opportunity to do so, and he has started firing on all cylinders. He leads his club with eight goals and shows no signs of diminishing as Chelsea attempt to keep up with Manchester United.

All four of these soccer players are a major reason for the current jump in goal scoring. Superstars like Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry are certainly having good seasons, but this astonishing group signifies the random and enjoyable aspect of attacking in English Premiership football.
