Reading Football Club keep winning in the English Premier League. All of a sudden the newly promoted Royals have their eyes on a UEFA Cup spot. They are 40/1 bet odds to finish in the top four of the Premiership.

Reading won their fourth straight game on Saturday by beating Bolton, and as a result, jumped over the Wanderers in the Premiership table. Kevin Doyle's header in the first-half was all they needed, and now the Royals finds themselves in the hunt for European competition in 2007-2008.

Reading have amassed 25 points, and amazingly are now tied for third spot in the EPL next to Arsenal, Liverpool and Portsmouth.

Sceptics expected Reading to be firmly in the relegation zone before the season ever started. The team had a good start to their year and then surprised many pundits. Then in October Reading began to slip, losing three of four football matches in the Premier League, and were outscored by an 8 to 2 margin.

The EPL debutants nearly collapsed after losing 2-0 to Liverpool in early November. But instead of giving up, the players lifted their game and defeated Tottenham, Charlton, Fulham and Bolton to lock up their spot in the top league.

Betting on Reading to finish in the top six in the Premiership pays out at 5.80 odds, which for many punters will be a tempting bet.

So how do the Royals feel about a possible place in UEFA competition? Coach Steve Coppell was optimistic.

"I know it is a nice story ... but I can honestly say it is not on our radar," Coppell said. "The moment we start thinking about pats on the back then we are in trouble. We have always been forward thinking."

Regardless, Reading are now clearly in UEFA Cup territory and will continue to be a in the spotlight if they continue their good form through the second half of the Premiership season. It would be a stunning reversal from playing three matches a week in the Championship to going head to head with Europe's elite next year.

But can Reading keep up the pace? They will be without US international Bobby Convey for three more weeks since the winger has recently had knee surgery.

Reading play against Newcastle in midweek, which could be a tough match for them. The bookies have listed Newcastle as slight favourites at 2.25 odds, but Reading can be expected to give them a run for their money. The Reading squad will want to stay focused to keep their UEFA Cup hopes alive.
