The list that Coach Glenn Hoddle presents is made up up of:

Goalkeepers:David Seaman, 34 years of age (Arsenal), Flowers (Blackburn), Nigel Martyn, 31 (Leeds United)

Glenn Hoddle

Defenders: Sol Campbell, 23 (Spurs), Tony Adams, 30 (Arsenal), Keown (Arsenal), Rio Ferdinand,19 (West Ham), Gareth Southgate, 27 (Villa), Gary Neville, 22 (Man United), Graeme Le Saux, 29 (Chelsea)

Midfielders: David Beckham, 22 (Man United), Darren Anderton, 25 (Spurs), Robert Lee, 31 (Newcastle), Steve McManaman, 25 (Liverpool), Paul Ince, 30 (Liverpool), David Batty, 29 (Newcastle), Paul Merson, 29 (Middlesbrough), Paul Scholes, 23 (Man United)

Forwards: Les Ferdinand, 30 (Spurs), Alan Shearer, 27 (Newcastle), Teddy Sheringham, 31 (Man United), Michael Owen 17 (Liverpool).

Who did not make it: Paul Gascoigne, 30. Other fringe players to be excluded included goalkeeper Ian Walker, 26, Phil Neville, 20, Andy Hinchcliffe,28, Nicky Butt and Dion Dublin, but Gascoigne's omission has easily grabbed the most attention. And it almost certainly signals the end of the international career of one of the most controversial figures in English sport.

Gascoigne was widely expected to be at the hub of England's midfield as Hoddle begins his bid to win the World Cup for England for the first time since Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966. "Gazza" had experience on his side as the only current squad member to have played in a World Cup finals. Hoddle had given the player a final warning over his behaviour last week but Gascoigne always appeared to be one of those world class players whose exclusion was deemed unthinkable and whose name was regularly chanted by the fans.

Almost every pundit had expected that one if not both of the Ferdinand cousins would be omitted. Instead both the West Ham teenager and the 31-year-old Tottenham striker were included after he, unlike Gascoigne was able to convince Hoddle of his fitness to take part. Manchester United duo Butt and Neville lost out to stronger claims by Rio Ferdinand and the late return to fitness of Tottenham midfielder Darren Anderton.

Chris Sutton, 24 of Blackburn, who lost his chance of a place in the World Cup plans after refusing to play for England in a B international three months ago.Jamie Redknapp, 24 of Liverpool lost his place after being injured three months ago. Flamboyant Arsenal striker Ian Wright was injured against Morocco 2 weeks ago and was also left out from the team.
