Scored five goals in Brazil's successful World Cup qualifying campaign for USA '94 and played in every game, scoring two goals, as Brazil won the World Cup, beating Italy on penalties in the final. Formed a lethal striking partnership with Romario. He was down to take the fifth kick of the shootout but Roberto Baggio's miss meant that Brazil won without him having to take it. Appeared in his third World Cup despite an unsettled 18 months which saw him move club six times and despite criticism from Brazilian fans who preferred to see Denilson in the starting line-up. Joined Rio de Janeiro club Flamengo in 1983 and became a protege of club idol and Brazil international Zico. Two years later, made his full international debut in a 1-0 defeat by Peru. Played for Brazil's silver-medal winning team in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, scoring two goals in the tournament. Also played for Brazil at the Atlanta Olympics but suffered one of the biggest let-downs of his career as Brazil lost to Nigeria 4-3 in the semifinals. In 1989, Bebeto scored first full international goal in 4-1 win over Peru in a friendly. Was also the tournament top-scorer with six goals as Brazil won the Copa America. Shortly afterwards, was poached by Flamengo's arch-rivals Vasco da Gama in a deal that Flamengo claimed was unethical. Has scored 36 goals in his 73 full international appearances.
