FRANCE 1938 OUTLOOK
France 1938 was the third World Cup.
That was Jules Rimet's Cup.
Like the two past editions great teams didn't went to France because of several reasons. Spain was in a middle of a Civil War. Austria had been attacked by Germany and its players went to the German team. England didn't want to replace Austria because they weren't prepared. Argentina losing the host of the World Cup to France didn't go, too.
This one, was the first tournament with a draw to determine the composition of the First Round pairings.
The defending champion (Italy) and the host (France) qualify automatically.
Every team had to present a roster with 22 players. If the final match ended in a tie the finalist teams would be declared co-champions , statement used only in this World Cup.
In the 1st Round Switzerland surprised the people tiying to Germany 1-1 in the opening match and beating them 4-2 in a tie-breaker creating the italian expression Catenaccio.
Italy, Czechoslovakia and France advanced to the 2nd Round. Sweden got a walkover. Cuba beat Romania in a tie-breaker match.
Hungary rolled over the former Dutch East Indies 6-0.
But these matches haven't got comparision to Brazil-Poland's one. One of the best 10, I think in World Cup History.
The game was really great and Leonidas was brillant. He put Brazil ahead 1-0.
Wilimowski tied the match 1-1.
Romeu and Peracio put Brazil ahead 3-1 at the end of the 1st Half.
Scherfke and Wilimowski again left the game drawn: 3-3.
Peracio with 18 minutes to play put Brazil 4-3.
And, it couldn't be otherwise, Wilimowski left the game 4-4 in the 88th minute.
In the overtime 1st Half Leonidas gave an excellent performing leaving the match 6-4.
Finally Wilimowski scored again but it wasn't enough.
Brazil won this great match 6-5.
In the Quarter-Finals Brazil advanced in a tie-breaker game beating Czechoslovakia. Their first game was the "ugly" game of this World Cup.
Sweden got the largest goals margin win up to now with an 8-0 victory over Cuba beating Hungary's one week ago against the Indies.
Hungary beat surprising Swiss 2-0.
Italy beat the host team, France, 3-1 with a game with great performings of Uruguayan Andreolo, Meazza, Colaussi, and striker Piola.
In the Semifinals Italy beat Brazil easily 2-1, but the Brazilians didn't play with his star Leonidas.
Hungary rolled over Sweden 5-1.
In the 3rd Place game, Leonidas came back and scored 2 goals for Brazil that was losing 2-0 coming to a 4-2 victory.
The final match was between Italy and Hungary. Italy was relaxed, Hungary was so nervous.
At 5 minutes Italy's Colaussi started the scoreboard. Italy 1-0.
2 minutes later Titkas tied the match leaving it 1-1.
But Piola with only 16 minutes after the start of the match left Italy 2-1.
Colaussi scored again and the half time scoreboard showed Italy 3-1 ahead.
Sarosi gave the Hungarians an ilusion leaving them 3-2 down.
But finally Piola scored again and Italy beat 4-2 and defended its crown but not for 4 years like would have been, but yes for 14 due to the cruel 2nd World War.
