Football Betting - Watford in Relegation Trouble?
Although there were no big expectations heading into the season, Watford's return to the English Premier League has been less than impressive so far. The club is still looking for their first Premiership win after drawing six and losing four to begin the year, but they've played inspired football in recent games. The Hornets came close against Tottenham on 28 October, but failed to gain a full three points as striker Tommy Smith could not convert an open goal chance in the eighth minute. Watford didn't capitalize on several chances despite dominating the first half, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
The squad has fought admirably to this point, yet has a mere six points to show for it and remains near the bottom of the table. One might assume frustration and pessimism is seeping into the Watford locker room after the disappointing start. However, the players remain optimistic and firmly believe they belong in the Premier League.
"Unfortunately, [the Spurs match] came down again to the finishing and us being unable to do that, but we will keep working on that, and when those things start happening, we will be where we want to be," American centre-back Jay DeMerit described. "Team spirit is one of the key things we carry at this team -- we all know each other, we're all good friends. I think those types of things go a long way in a season like this one"
Midfielder Damien Francis concurs. "There is no panic, we aren't being outplayed at all," he asserted. "We're all very positive because there's a lot still to be positive about. The atmosphere around the club is still top class."
The team has got praise from their Premiership opposition despite their current predicament. Both managers, Martin Jol and Alex Ferguson, have had positive responses to Watford's play and their potential to succeed in the EPL.
The Hornets' next attempt at three points is on Saturday against Middlesbrough. William Hill bookmakers have underdogs Watford at 3/2 odds at home, but the Hornets have a good chance of picking up the win. Expect Ashley Young to take advantage of a weak Middlesbrough back line that has been helpless on set pieces, as shown by their most recent defeat at the hands of Man City. Also keep an eye on Smith to redeem himself and score his first goal this year.
If Watford can grab their first win, the Hornets should be manage to climb up near the middle of the league table. Marlon King's return from injury will be a big help in that effort.
November will be a tough month for the Hornets, including away fixtures at Chelsea and Portsmouth. But the team's spirit and resolve should carry them through, and I expect Watford to collect another seven or eight points by December. Regardless, Watford should continue to improve and battle hard to avoid relegation, so don't write them off quite yet.
